Around Mingenew
Mingenew Springs Caravan Park is situated in the historic and picturesque surrounds of the Mingenew Spring, Lee Steere Street, Mingenew.
Mingenew is a small farming community, inland from the Batavia Coast and Dongara, and south east of Geraldton. Mingenew is at latitude 29.12’ South and longitude 115.26’ east and 153m above sea level. The Shire is adjoined by Shires of Three Spings, Irwin and Mullewa.
Mingenew is the gateway to WA's Wildflower Country. On our door step, the extraordinary wildflower displays of Coalseam Conservation Park, Depot Hill Reserve and Mingenew Hill await you. At night, our clear skies and dazzling starry nights will amaze you.
COALSEAM
Located 33km north east of Mingenew on Coalseam Rd, the Coalseam Conservation Park is a renowned site for its carpets of native pink and white everlastings and yellow pom pom wildflowers.
The area was named the Coalseam after the Gregory brothers discovered coal exposed within the sedimentary layers of the banks of the Irwin River in 1846. This marked the first discovery of coal in Western Australia, however, after a number of shafts were dug, only narrow seams of poor quality coal were found; thus the site was abandoned. The park is now a popular picnic place, where remnants of its mining history are still present as well as the many marine fossils embedded in the riverbank and the magnificent limestone cliffs from the Permian Ice Age, 250 million years ago – the oldest geological era.
DEPO HILL
Depo Hill is a short 12km drive northwest of Mingenew to the magnificent rugged reserve of Depot Hill. This is a great spot to park up and go for a wander, enjoy a picnic on the tranquil banks of the river beneath the leafy gums or you may like to walk the bush track up to the historic WW2 Army Rifle Range.
Please allow a minimum of 30 minutes for this nature walk and take your wildflower booklets to identify the many species you will see along the way, these may include orchids, everlastings, cats paw, thriptomene, dampiera & many more.
Depot Hill is accessible via the Allanooka Springs Rd (sealed & signposted) from Geraldton to Mingenew
MINGENEW HILL
Drovers Rest, at the bottom of Mingenew Hill, is a perfect place for caravanners and visitors to pull over and have a rest. Located on the left only a few hundred metres after turning onto the Mullewa Rd. The water trough and tank seen at Drovers rest, are reminders of our droving history. This ties in with out droving mural in the main street.
Halfway up Mingenew Hill, on the track, is a lookout where you can see wonderful views of the Mingenew townsite and surrounds.
At the southwest end of the hill the Mingenew Nature Reserve (CALM) is found. Please see the wonderful volunteers at the Tourist Centre for more information.
